Hi! I just recently found you and noticed your deadline for this past zine was two days ago. I was wondering, are you planning on anymore zines/could I write a submission for the next issue? Thanks!

I will definitely be putting out the next issue, but it is taking longer than I had hoped due to my summer classes and other obligations. But please feel free to submit! I look forward to seeing what you have! =)

See her shirt? It doesn’t look “wrong,” does it? It’s a gay pride shirt.

Her counselor begs to differ. Her mom got an email that asked her not to let Kailee wear “gay shirts” to school anymore.

That’s incredibly ignorant. I seriously cannot believe that a PUBLIC SCHOOL would prevent students from wearing gay pride shirts. It’s not like she’s promoting violence or drugs & alcohol or illegal activities. She’s promoting something she believes in. I am fuming.

The presentation of the zine to my class seemed to go really well. I won’t get my grade back...

The presentation of the zine to my class seemed to go really well. I won’t get my grade back until Tuesday, but I feel confident that I did a good job. Not only this, but two girls in my class offered to help collaborate on future issues! They are both art majors, so the next issues should be really fantastic! After I finally get the money to print more copies (all the money I had went into printing copies for my class), I will send the copies out to submitters and take orders.

Josh Hutcherson of The Hunger Games will soon be presented with GLAAD’s Vanguard Award, an honor for media professionals who increase understanding and visibility of the LGBT community through their work. At age 19, he’ll be the youngest person ever to get the award.

Hutcherson played the son of two lesbian moms in the film The Kids Are All Right and he co-founded the Straight But Not Narrow (SNBB) campaign, appearing in one of the first PSAs for the group.

“We just launched [SBNN], and it’s a very exciting time for us and it hits close to home for me,” Hutcherson said in an earlier interview with SamaritanMag.com. “I have a lot of gay friends in Los Angeles. My roommate’s gay and I lost two uncles when I was young to AIDS, so it’s an important cause in my family.”

The ceremony for the GLAAD Media Awards is taking place this Saturday. Way to go, Josh! Hopefully more young advocates will follow in his footsteps.

Wow, this is terrific! My respect for him has greatly deepened!

Alphabet Soup Zine is still taking submissions! I’ve decided to extend the deadline until Friday to give everyone a little extra time to submit since I know people have busy lives like I do.

And please feel free to submit anything (poetry, fiction, mini-play or screenplay, artwork, book or movie reviews, essays, recipes, an explanation on why you like a certain lgbtq character, who inspires you) as long as it relates to either lgbtq people or life in some way!

New York’s long-running LGBT film festival, NewFest, is merging with Outfest, organizers announced today.

This year’s NewFest, held July 27 through July 30, will be programmed by Outfest as a first step toward becoming one national arts organization.

“Outfest brings a wealth of knowledge and wide-ranging capabilities to NewFest,” said the event’s co-president of the board, Steve Mendelsohn. He said the new arrangement with Outfest, which is based in Los Angeles, will make for a better festival in New York and expand programming year round.

NewFest is more than 20 years old, and Outfest is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Submissions for my zine are still open!

You can submit anything you like whether it be fiction, poetry, art work, rants, movie/book reviews, coming out stories, etc as long as it pertains to LGBTQ people in some way. It can be a one paragraph blurb about why a certain LGBTQ character is inspirational to you, something that gave you hope, anything really. Also, I can keep it completely anonymous if you want!
